Reading
- In Readers Workshop this week, we will focus on how books and characters often teach us a "lesson." The author wants us to learn and gain a life lesson for the stories they tell.
- After we have read many books, we will learn that sometimes we can predict what the life lesson might be in a new book we are reading. A big thing we will focus on this week is learning life lessons from books however this does NOT mean we are reading a NONFICTION book. We can learn new things from fiction books as well.
- We will also compare and contrast different books and the life lessons that they teach.
- Friday we will celebrate the completion of this reading unit! Students will get to choose one of their favorite characters from the books and draw a "selfie" of the character and give details about what they have learned about their character.
- Thursday Feb 1st we will have a reading comprehension test over an independent level F book. The students will read the story then answer comprehension questions about the book. A review sheet was sent home last week in your child's planner. Please review these concepts to help prepare them for this test.

Word Study
- This week, we will be learning and working with the -ar word family (ex: far). We will be discussing the "bossy r" rule and how it can change the sound that a vowel makes.
- You will see a GREEN WORD STUDY BOOKLET in the back of your child's binder. Just a reminder that this booklet stays in their binder. It should never stay at home. ALSO, your child should NOT work ahead on this booklet at home. We will work through it together at school, and then they can use it as a study tool at home. Please make sure they DO NOT work ahead in it at home. Thank you for your help with this!
