Due to all of the missed days of school this year, the 100th day is going to land on Valentine’s Day. We will still be celebrating, but it will look a little different this year. On Feb. 14th, if you would like, you can send your child in a decorated shirt that has 100 items on it (stickers, hearts, googly eyes, etc.). This is optional as we know you are already preparing for Valentines. Your students will wear their shirts on February 14th!
In math on the 100th day of school, we will be doing some fun activities in class! Your child will get to write about what they would do if they had $100! We will also practice writing and skip counting to 100!
This week, we will also read the story, Equal Shmequal. We will have a discussion about what the words balanced and equal means. When something is balanced when both sides have the same quantity or mass. When something is equal that means exactly the same amount or value. We will also review the vocab words sum and addends. A sum the total amount resulting from the addition of two or more numbers, amounts, or items. The addends are the numbers you are adding together.
After reading the story, we will practice making different equations equal on the balance scale. For example, 4+2=6 and 6=4+2. We will review that the equal sign/sum can go in front of the two numbers being added together or behind the numbers.
Afterwards, the students will create a flip book. . On the outside of the flip book the students will write an equation with the equal sign/sum at the end. For instance, 1+5=6. On the inside of the book, the S will write an equation with the equal sign/sum at the beginning. For instance, 6=1+5.
Later in the week, the students will participate in an accountable talk. The teacher will displays 4 red hearts and 2 pink hearts on the Smartboard. The teacher will explain that one teacher has 4 red hearts and 2 pink hearts. Then, the teacher will explain that another teacher has 5 red hearts and 0 pink hearts. The students will have to figure how many pink hearts the second teacher needs to make it fair (1 pink heart). We will use a math balance scale to help us determine 4+2=5+1.
Science
This week in Science, we will describe and identify different sources of water based on observable characteristics, such as color and clarity. We will learn that ocean water tends to be a blueish green color and lakes are usually green from algae. We will also discuss that old rivers have brown muddy water and streams have clear fresh water. Later in the week, we will identify and learn how to use natural resources and materials, including conservation and reuse or recycling of paper, plastic, and metal.
Social Studies: This week in Social Studies, we will practice saying the Texas Pledge and learn about different symbols/mottos in Texas.
