Reading
- In Reader's Workshop this week, we will continue using our word detective skills by taking a closer look at word.
- We will look at breaking about big words into smaller parts until the word sounds right or makes sense.
- Then we will focus on just the endings of words and "break off" the parts of the words we know. For example -ing,-ed-es-s. This will help us recognize the ends of words more quickly.
- Please practice these word detective strategies at home on those "tricky" words.
Writing
- In Writer's Workshop, we will continue to learn and write How-to books. We will start the week by "acting out" a how-to activity. How to make trail mix! We will make trail mix together then the students will write a step by step how-to.
- Throughout the week we will focus on how to add details and transition words to our writing. We will also work on making sure our sentences start with a capital letter and end with punctuation marks.
Grammar and Conventions
- This week we will be focusing on adverbs. Adverbs are similar to transition words because they tell WHEN something is happening in a sentence. For example: before, first, next, after....
Word Study
- This week, we will be introducing and working with the -it/-ift word families and will be exploring many different words that contain these word families such as bit and lift.

- You will see a GREEN WORD STUDY BOOKLET in the back of your child's binder. Just a reminder that this booklet stays in their binder. It should never stay at home. ALSO, your child should NOT work ahead on this booklet at home. We will work through it together at school, and then they can use it as a study tool at home. Please make sure they DO NOT work ahead in it at home. Thank you for your help with this!
