Reading
- In Readers Workshop this week, we are starting a new unit: Readers have Big Jobs to Do! We have worked so hard on tackling those hard tricky words we are now ready to focus a lot of our reading on comprehension!
- First we will make sure that we stop and check our understanding while we are reading to make sure we understand what is happening in our books.
- We will practice "making a movie in our heads" to visualize our books other than the pictures given to us in the books.
- Dialogue is a big part of reading and we need to make sure we know who is talking while we read!
Writing
- We are starting a new unit in Writers Workshop: Using Authors as Mentors. We will start the week by writing down story ideas in our "tiny topics notebooks". When something happens to us in real life that would make a good story we will stop and write it down to use later!
- We will be focusing on the author Angelia Johnson and learning what she does as a writer and use that in our own writing.
- We will work on this such as zooming in on a small moment, stretching that small moment across several pages, and using ellipses to build suspense in our stories.
Word Study
- This week, we will be learning and working with the -ir word family (ex: girl). We will be discussing the "bossy r" rule and how it can change the sound that a vowel makes.
- You will see a GREEN WORD STUDY BOOKLET in the back of your child's binder. Just a reminder that this booklet stays in their binder. It should never stay at home. ALSO, your child should NOT work ahead on this booklet at home. We will work through it together at school, and then they can use it as a study tool at home. Please make sure they DO NOT work ahead in it at home. Thank you for your help with this!
